Your monthly household grocery shopping is up there with the most costly outgoing after your mortgage/rent, so it makes sense to find ways to save on this expense. I love sharing tips for how to save money on the food bill and I’ve helped thousands of people to save money every month on theirs.

Tips for How To Save Money On Your Grocery Shopping
Plan, Plan, plan!
I cannot express enough how being organised with your meal planning and your food shopping can save you hundreds per month. It saves you dropping in more often than you need to and reduces the risk of the cost of those visits stacking up. When I meal plan for what to get when grocery shopping I do it backwards – I look at what food I already have in the fridge and cupboards and I meal plan accordingly. If I have a bag of spinach to use up for example, I will make sure meal one of the week includes spinach, and so on. Once you get into the habit of this it becomes a quick and simple process and will undoubtedly save you lots of money on your grocery shopping.
Shop strategically.
Shopping tactically can make a real difference. It doesn’t take much research to find the best shopping methods to save money on your grocery shopping, once you do you can save a fortune. We’ve been using the Tesco Clubcard Plus subscription recently which is £7.99 per month and saves us 10% off of 2 in-store shops of up to £200 each per month – meaning it pays for itself easily by saving up to £40 per month. It has many additional benefits including 10% off of Tesco’s many brands in store all the time, such as Fred & Flo baby range and F&F clothing – (I’ve always had a thing for the Tesco clothing range, such good value!). You can cancel the Clubcard Plus subscription any time which means you’re not locked into a long contract which I love. You simply do your normal grocery shop and then scan your Clubcard App which is linked to your Clubcard Plus account and your savings come off at the till. Shopping savvy is essential to saving month on your grocery shop! (T&Cs and exclusions apply.)

Stock up on store cupboard basics.
Once you get the knack for creating meals from just a few basics in the cupboard you can really help save towards the cost of your shopping as it stops you from just popping out to the shops for dinner – or worse – getting takeaway!! A few of my store cupboard meal favourites are chickpea curry and tuna pasta bake. I always have tinned tomatoes, chickpeas, coconut milk and lots of herbs and spices in the cupboards!
Reduce meat consumption.
Just by taking meat out of your diet once or twice per month can help save lots of money on your grocery shopping. We do meat-free Mondays and then try to make sure another night of the week is meat free too. I have a whole playlist of meal ideas over on my YouTube channel if you need some meal inspiration!

Make your list and stick to it!
60% of people who make a list and stick to it save money on their grocery shopping. I find it quite therapeutic making the list and it also reminds me of what we have in the cupboard so I don’t re-buy things we don’t need while I’m at the supermarket. It’s really important not to stray from it though as this causes unnecessary expense so don’t get tempted by those items things that are on offer – they’re only a good deal if you need it in the first place!
Don’t go grocery shopping hungry!
Hands up who’s guilty of going to the supermarket straight from work and spending almost double what you’d usually spend, I know I’ve done this on more than one occasion! In fact, 3 out of 5 people do so you’re not alone! Fill up before you go and you’ll be much less inclined to be tempted by all the things you’d like to eat right there and then!

Buy In bulk.
This is especially relevant to meat-eaters. Often seasonal meat will be on offer so it’s a great time to stock up and freeze items for when you need them. Think lamb at Easter and steaks in the summer. This is a great way of saving money.
Buy in season.
Not only is this a great way of shopping sustainably but it saves money too. Buying strawberries in the winter will mean that they’ve been flown 4,000 miles to get to you and wont be their freshest and most tasty – it also means you’ll be paying a premium for having them available. Stick to produce locally grown that season so you get fruit and veg at their best without contributing to a huge amount of unnecessary air miles to get it to you.

September 24, 2020Great tips here. We already use the Tesco Delivery Saver but I’d not heard of the Tesco Clubcard Plus subscription before. I think it’s a great idea.

September 26, 2020I was so pleasantly surprised with the Plus subscription, and that Tesco price match so much of Aldi’s pricing – I’d definitely recommend checking it out if you’re spending more than £80 per month on food as it will pay for itself and more! xx
