Learning To Swim At 4 years Old

This weekend has been relatively quiet, Henry had his first swim lesson of the year and I was so pleased that he hadn’t forgotten anything since his last lesson back in November. He has come on so much and it just makes my heart burst watching him flourish at it. In June last year we went to France on holiday and he wouldn’t even get in the pool, it was then I knew we had to get his confidence in the water up. Towards the end of our holiday he was slowly starting to really enjoy being in the water – albeit still holding on to us for dear life for the most part!

– Learning To Swim –

When we got home I booked him in straight away and his swim lessons began in July – back before the schools broke up and he pretty much had the pool to himself! It was quite a shock when we had to start taking him once the schools had broken up and also on Saturdays – it was hectic to say the least, but he took it all in his stride and this Saturday he beamed as he leapt into the water off of the sides and continued to impress us with his underwater-breath-holding-swimming! (this is the boy who wouldn’t even want to get his hair wet a few months ago.)

We are heading to Florida in August and I absolutely can’t wait to see all the fun he will have in the pool, it’s my goal to have him really confident and able by then. Once George turns 3 he’s going to start his lessons too alongside big brother, the teacher said it’s best to let George have the first 5 minutes of Henry’s lesson just to get used to it and then Henry can take over for the rest of it, I am hoping he will come on just as quickly as Henners, although defiant as that little boy of mine is, he may have other ideas of course!

Our swimming teacher was recommended to us by our friends – who collectively have about 8 children who use her, or have in the past. She is so good with him, he just seems to listen to everything she says and she’s brought him on so much already! I always go in with George while he has his lesson (Daddy too when he’s home) and together we have a fun family swim afterwards so that it’s not all work and no play for Henry. Sadly our local pool has a lot to be desired on the cleanliness front, I always feel like I need to scrub my feet clean when we get home!

As always, my Monday post is a link up to Living Arrows which is all about celebrating childhood, I figure learning to swim is such an important part of childhood and I wanted to celebrate this milestone in my big boy’s little life, thanks for reading x
