With our new house search continuing I thought would be a great time to chat about how to relax into your new house and make it feel like home for anyone else moving at the moment. The average person moves eight times in their lifetime. One of the most fantastic feelings I can imagine is when you settle into a house that’s your own.
Unfortunately, all of the charm that may come with a new home can be lost in the stress of moving. Whether your Halton real estate is a new build or you’re fixing up an older house, you must find a way to relax so I wanted to share some of the first things to do when you move into a new house to help you unwind and make your house feel like home.
Ensure The Smells Are Familiar
Smells make up so much of how we experience the world and evoke so many memories and feelings. They tell us when something is going to taste good or when something is clean or dirty. When you move into a new house, it’s going to smell noticeably different from where you lived previously. Light candles, or use wall plug-ins, that smell how your home smelled where you used to live. A familiar scent will relax you and melt away any stress from moving.
Put Up Art You Love To See
Empty walls can make space feel more extensive and more barren in a new house. After you’ve moved in all of the large boxes and furniture, hang some basic and beautiful things on your walls. This art can range from clocks to large prints and even paintings and photographs. Putting pretty home decor up early can allow you to have something for your eyes to settle on when you enter a room, instead of boxes that need to get unpacked as well as making it feel more homely.
Set Up Speakers Early
Whether you’re still unpacking or you’re living in a mostly empty home that needs to be filled out: set up your speakers as soon as possible. This will give you the chance to listen to music while you unpack, and also the opportunity to relax. Unpacking with music gives you a rhythm and beat to move to and will help you unpack faster. Soothing music can also help your mind rest when you settle in from a long day and help you fall asleep more easily.
Break In The Kitchen Of Your New House
If you go for a pre-existing home over a new-build, you should give everything a good scrub down and start afresh. Within the first week of living there, cook something familiar that you love to eat. This will allow you to fill your home with some familiar and delicious smells and give you a piece of comfort in flavor. The serotonin from beloved foods will let you unwind and relax in no time. For me, that first takeaway we get after we’ve spent the day moving boxes and getting everything in is something I am so excited for!
Make Soft Spaces To Unwind In Your New Home
What type of textures do you love most? Do you like soft rugs but have hardwood floors? Is your new leather couch not as pleasing to lay down on? Buy delicate items to allow you to unwind, like soft fluffy rugs, blankets you can wrap around you, and towels that will make getting out of the shower feel luxurious. You can have this work in every room of your new house, from a comfy office chair to new pillows in your bedroom and even comfortable rugs in the kitchen where you stand the most. These textures will let you relax and a feel at home.
I hope these tips for how to make a house a home can make you feel relaxed in your new home, follow along for more of our journey to becoming home owners!
